The documents were obtained in 2002, through the effort of Professor Kęstutis Kilkus, from the founder’s daughter, E. Masiokienė, a resident of the U.S.A.

The founders of this collection are Count Stanislovas Kazimieras Kosakovskis (Kasakauskas) (Stanisław Kazimierz Kossakowski, 1837–1904), owner of the Vaitkuškis estate in Ukmergė County,  agriculturist, Polish poet and playwright, photographer; and his son, the writer Mykolas Kosakovskis (Michał Kossakowski) .

The collection was acquired in 1941 from the Vaitkuškis estate, and its other part was received in 1954 from the Vilnius Art Museum (the present-day Lithuanian National Museum of Art).

The founder of this collection is Juozapas Kozakevičius (1858–1940), an accountant who lived in Panevėžys since 1882, worked at the Panevėžys Mutual Credit Society, and was regularly reelected to the Panevėžys Duma. He wrote a memoir entitled “Amžiaus kronika” (“The Chronicle of the Age”), which is the only work of this kind Panevėžys of the late 19th – early 20th century.

The collection was acquired in 1950 from the library of the then Kaunas State University, to which the founder had donated the documents in 1937.
